Module 7.4 Project Work

Q Evaluate Throughout this course, you have been developing your Capstone project. You started off by selecting a topic, forming a hypothesis, and conducting a literature review examining your social justice issue through the lens of two or three psychological theories used to better describe the problem, explain why it exists and what has perpetuated the problem, make predictions, and present suggestions for controlling the problem based on strategies you found in your research. The multimedia project provides you with the opportunity to share your research findings with others in a more engaging manner, interweaving strategies of storytelling to engage your audience, promote empathy, and motivate social change. So, why this additional "3 minute thesis presentation"? An important part of any graduate program as well as many research-oriented careers involves presenting research to audiences that may be comprised of other researchers, experts in the field, and potential funders for grants. Thus, it will be important for you to be able to present your research in three minute thesis. Although there is a familiar format used in writing a lit review, including an abstract, introduction, hypothesis, thesis statement, body, methodology section, and discussion, the same format does not apply to your three minute thesis presentation, so please pay careful attention to the details below. Step 1: Review the 3 Minute Thesis Scenario Looks like your multimedia presentation has not only been viewed but has made an impact! Your local state rep now wants to introduce you by Zoom to a potential grant funder to explore the implementation of your proposed solutions to your social justice issue. Unlike your previous audiences, this potential funder is well versed in psychology and wants to hear about the details of your research and the theoretical foundations of your solution. That said, you still need to leverage everything you know about persuasion as there are many other social justice issues and proposals competing for these same grant dollars. You’ve got three minutes on Zoom to make your case. No multimedia. Just you talking. Good luck. Step 2: Design and record your 3-minute thesis Note that this video must be of YOU and should not feature cutaways to any other visuals or footage. This is you caught on film delivering your thesis. For maximum points, your video should be three minutes or less and structured as follows: • the beginning (i.e., the “hook” that is used to initially grab the attention of your audience) • the body (this is where you will engage the audience and present the core research) • conclusion (this is where you are summarizing your research and present the take-home message). And while developing a script is required, your 3 minute thesis presentation should not be read and should be delivered both conversationally and persuasively. In a real elevator, you won't have a script! Our Audio/Video instructions page provides resources on different recording options as well as recording tips. Step 3: Review this past student 3-minute thesis example... ...relating to reparations for slavery and equalizing public school education. Please note, however, that you will need to submit a video for your 3-minute thesis (and not just an audio file). Step 4: Document your references in APA format along with your speech transcript Note that your transcript need not match your delivered speech word for word. Step 5: Post your 3 minute thesis presentation along with your transcript and references As a video file or link and a Word Document. This assignment is due by 11:59 pm ET on Thursday. Step 6: Watch your classmates' 3 minute presentations and provide feedback to at least three. This will be informal feedback rather than rubric-based. • What did you find interesting about their speech? • What questions came to mind as you listened to their delivery? • What helpful suggestions would you like to share? Replies are due by 11:59 pm ET on Sunday. Evaluation This discussion activity will be graded according to the 3-Minute Thesis Discussion rubric. Review the rubric and Discussion Board expectations in advance to know how you will be assessed. Project work represents 50% of your final grade. Outcomes This activity assesses the following module outcomes: • M7-01: Deliver a complex visual and oral presentation within appropriate constraints. (CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4, CO6) • M7-02: Provide informative performance feedback concerning oral presentation to peers. (CO1, CO7) • M7-03: Accurately self-assess performance quality by melding external standards and expectations with personal criteria. (CO3, CO4, CO5, CO7) • M7-05: Discuss the application and importance of oral and multimedia presentation skills in a professional environment.

Hi, Everyone! I am Shawnelle Parker, and I am going to share my social justice topic, Racism, that I have explored throughout this course. Today I will share its findings and suggestions that I have thought of while thoroughly exploring racism and its impact. Racism is a serious social justice issue that needs solving because it has destroyed many potential individuals who could do wonders and make this world better. It has deepened roots in our society and is not giving the margin to minorities to function optimally. While recognizing individual Racism, they accented institutionally, termed systemic Racism, which is less overt and less identifiable in specific individuals committing the acts. But it is no less destructive to human life (Feagin & Bennefield, 2014).
